POLAR PLANK VS. TRADITIONAL LOGS

While traditional stacked log cabins possess historic frontier charm, they suffer from inherent physical flaws: continuous timber checking, joint shrinkage, air leaks, and ongoing chinking maintenance. Discover how Polar Plank solves these issues.

1. Why Do Traditional Log Homes Settle?

As freshly harvested logs dry over their first several Alaska freeze-thaw seasons, timber shrinks along its diameter. A stacked log wall can settle by 3 to 6 inches over several years. This requires builders to install screw jacks under vertical posts, leave hollow gaps above window and door frames, and continuously monitor settling. Polar Plank eliminates settling entirely: our structural timber framing carries vertical loads, while our insulated panel core remains dimensionally stable forever.

2. The Chinking Dilemma in Sub-Zero Winters

In sub-zero climates, exterior chinking elastomeric sealants expand and contract violently. Over time, adhesive failure allows moisture and freezing air to penetrate between log rounds, requiring expensive, tedious re-chinking. Polar Plank’s interlocking precision panels are sealed and insulated internally at our Soldotna mill—delivering authentic timber warmth with zero exterior chinking maintenance.
